About Caroline
Caroline is a Professor and holds the DST/NRF SARChI Research Chair in Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Development within the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She has an extensive academic background and has served as the Head of the Department of Commercial Law and as Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Studies at UCT. Caroline is a respected member of several advisory groups, including the African Policy, Research & Advisory Group on STI, the African Network of International Economic Law (AfIELN) Advisory Board, and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
Caroline's expertise has been sought by various institutions, and she has served as an expert for the African Union, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the AfCFTA Secretariat, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
With a rich academic career, Caroline currently teaches Electronic Law and Intellectual Property (IP) Law at the postgraduate level at UCT, while also supervising master's and PhD candidates in IP law and other areas of commercial law.
As an NRF rated researcher, Caroline is actively involved in research projects focusing on open development, access to knowledge, and promoting a balanced approach to IP Law. She is affiliated with various academic associations, including the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP), the South African Association of Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology Law Teachers and Researchers (AIPLITL), and the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa (SLTSA). Additionally, she is an Associate Member at the University of Ottawa's Centre for Law, Technology, and Society.
Education
Caroline holds a PhD in IP Law from the University of Cape Town, an LLM from the University of Cambridge, and an LLB from the University of Zimbabwe.
